YWCA El Paso Del Norte Region is committed to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
YWCA Youth Swim Lessons - The ability to swim is a life skill that can prevent drowning, the leading cause of accidental death for children. While many Americans view swimming as a recreational sport, YWCA understands that the ability to swim and access to swim lessons is a social equity issue. 4 out of 6 Hispanic children and 5 out of 6 Black children do not have swim skills and are at risk of drowning. Data from the National Institute of Health showed an 88% reduction in drowning risk for children ages 1 – 4 who received formal swim lessons. El Paso is a community where approximately 81% of the population identifies as Latino, these statistics have significant impact on the safety of El Paso’s children. YWCA offers youth swim lessons to underserved populations in El Paso and operates to reduce the number of Black and Latino children at risk of drowning by promoting access to affordable, high-quality youth swim lessons, and providing competitive wages to lifeguards and swim instructors. YWCA provided swim lessons to 1,040 children in 2024 at the four YWCA branches across El Paso. Aligning with the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all, the organization chooses to highlight the Youth Swim Lessons program to continue to remove barriers and ensure every child can access high-quality swim lessons.
